Exercise 8: Time Observation

Come up with several ways of documenting the passage of time, based on where you are sitting.

  • Look out the window to see when it becomes light
  • See if the calendar moves at all- or wait until host mom walks in to change the month
  • Turn the TV on to see what time it is
  • Look at the computer/phone/iPhone/watch to check the time
  • Play games in my head
  • Count the seconds
  • Wait until someone calls and tells me how long I’ve been sitting in the room
  • Call home on skype, ask them what time it is and then do the math to figure out what time it is here
  • Ask how long it takes before the lights die from being turned on for too long, then wait until that happens
  • Go to the kitchen and check the time
  • Estimate how long it will take to read one book, then read that book, and assume it’s been in the same time frame as you originally predicted
  • Sleep
  • Eat

The universe is the mirror in which we can contemplate only what we have learned to know in ourselves. -Mr. Palomar, by Italo Calvino
